Democrats target Orange County’s State Senate seats for 2020 elections

wo of the five State Senate seats that touch Orange County are up for election in 2020, and while both are held by Republican incumbents Democrats see both as potential flip districts, as the party hopes to make the county match its statewide super majority.

But Republicans are confident that a controversial challenger in one race, and a well-known incumbent in the other will help Sens. Ling Ling Chang, R-Diamond Bar, and John Moorlach, R-Costa Mesa, hang on to their seats.

Yorba Linda leaders give deadline for short-term rental operators to wind down

Residents across Yorba Linda are breathing a sigh of relief after the City Council adopted an ordinance banning short-term rentals in all of the city’s residential zones, based on a slew of comments on the issue posted on social media sites.

The ordinance takes effect July 4, 30 days after a second reading of the law was approved at a June 4 council meeting, although currently licensed facilities have a six-month grace period, extending to Jan. 4, 2020, to wind down operations.

Force picks up fourth No. 1 qualifier at 2019 Summit NHRA Nationals

Advance Auto Parts Top Fuel Dragster pilot Brittany Force is the No. 1 qualifier on Saturday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals. She went 3.712 at 328.38 mph on Friday night to claim the No. 1 spot at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

This is her fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season. Her last No. 1 qualifier came in Atlanta in May.

O.C. housing’s worst slump since ’12 cut sales by 13% in Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, La Habra, Placentia, Yorba Linda

Home buying in Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, La Habra, La Palma, Placentia and Yorba Linda fell 13% in what was Orange County slowest nine months of sales since 2012.

For nine consecutive months through April, CoreLogic housing stats show countywide sales failing to top the year-ago period. We wanted to see how these lethargic sales trends played out at the neighborhood level knowing that home buying declined in roughly eight of nine local ZIP codes.

Where you can celebrate July 4th and watch fireworks in Orange County

American independence will be celebrated across Orange County on the Fourth of July – and in a few cases on July 3.

Check out community events that are planned where you can enjoy some fun during the day and a fireworks spectacular at night. Events are on July 4 unless otherwise noted.

Yorba Linda: Yorba Linda’s annual Fourth of July Spectacular will kick off at 5 p.m. with family activities, food for sale and Eric Sage’s Ultimate Rock Show performing at Veterans Park and Yorba Linda Middle School. The fireworks show will begin at 9 p.m. The event is free. Information: 714-961-7160.

– East Lake Village will get into the spirit early with its annual Patriotic Boat Parade on July 3. Boats will be decked out with the red, white and blue – and lights – to tour around the lake starting at 9 p.m. The public can watch from the greenbelts that surround the lake. Food trucks in the village’s parking lot will be selling from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mapped: How much do Californians borrow for autos? Yorba Linda ranks No. 1

Who’s got the biggest auto loan debts in California?

LendingTree, an online loan-shopping service, attempted to answer that question by studying the aggregated finances of its customers in 165 of the larger California cities. Granted, it’s one company’s client base — and those folks are loan shoppers. Still, it’s a glimpse into who’s borrowing and how much, city-by-city.

When my trusty spreadsheet looked at the auto loan data (average balances, how many folks carry a car payment and its share of non-mortgage debts), it found the biggest debts mostly were in communities known for long commutes and little auto borrowing in urban locales.

Yorba Linda seeing more revenue from taxes

Yorba Linda has “a thriving local business community,” based on accelerating sales tax revenue, and “positive growth” in land valuations, based on increasing property tax income.

That’s the assessment of City Manager Mark Pulone and Finance Director Scott Catlett, as expressed in a letter accompanying the 163-page Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the 2018 fiscal year compiled by a city-hired auditing firm and presented to the City Council recently.
