Then-Gov. Ronald Reagan’s racist comments about United Nations delegation revealed in taped conversation with President Richard Nixon

Conversations taped in 1971 by President Richard Nixon and released publicly in July captured Ronald Reagan’s racist comments about African United Nations delegates and Nixon’s similar remarks in a followup conversation with his secretary of state.

In a phone call between Nixon and Reagan, a future president who at the time was governor of California, Reagan refers to the delegates as “those monkeys from those African countries” and says they’re “still uncomfortable wearing shoes.”
